Why my Sleep Routine needs to change

Good Evening,

For so long, people have always told me how much I am not a morning person. I hate being classed as lazy just because I can’t get up but it is actually starting to annoy me too.

Waking up and still feeling exhausted and setting multiple alarms which I switch off and then get annoyed when I feel bad. I want to be able to get up before 9am instead of having that feeling where I wake up at 11am and feel like I’ve wasted my day.

I want to be able to be that morning person that I am always really envious of. You know what I mean, those people who tell you all the tasks they’ve managed to get done before you are even out of bed. That is who I want to be!

I have already started to do several things to try and gradually build a routine including using the miracle ‘Sleepy‘ cream from Lush. I am now going to make a vow to myself and I feel like writing this down making myself accountable for these changes will help it to actually work.


My Vow, what I can do to change my routine:

  1. Start reading more

The first thing that I always think of when I was younger is how much I used to love reading. I feel like my phone has replaced this part of my routine and I need to get back into it.

I remember reading every single one of Jacqueline Wilson’s books as the stories of Tracy Beaker and Lola Rose formed my childhood brain. I would love to do a little throwback read and get some of those old books back into my life.

At the moment I am currently reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed as I am all about those travel books and learning about other peoples experiences. Particularly solo women heading abroad spontaneously to ‘find themselves’. I watched the film not so long ago and absolutely loved it so now I am reading the book.

I would love to start doing little reviews on the books that I read to hopefully inspire you all to do so too, let me know what you think in the comments. 

2. Turn my phone off

It probably seems like such a simple step, but as I mentioned my phone seems to have taken over the role of my books. I will lay there for hours watching Youtube videos and then I wonder why my brain is not switching off.

I feel like we are all guilty of this aren’t we? Even when we go to bed our phones still absorb all of our energy. I need to just put my phone away onto my bedside table or across the room so I am not tempted to sleep with it next to my head.

There are several things that you can do with your phone to make it more ‘sleep friendly’ such as putting it onto its ‘night shift mode’ to give off a warmer light.  However I am going to start putting my phone away and relying less on it before I go to bed.

3. Use Lush products

Working at Lush I have discovered so many products that before I probably may not have tried. I already use the majority of Lush products in my routine for my skincare and my hair, however now I like to get myself feeling all cosy with some great products.

Starting off with spraying my bedding with the Twilight Body Spray.

A few sprays of this beautiful blend of tonka and lavender makes my body immediately recognise that it is time for bed. It is such a comforting smell and interestingly it has been found that the smell of lavender dates back to the Ancient Egyptian times used in aromatherapy to help you relax.

Lavender supposedly helps to reduce stress levels which is why it then eases your body into sleep, that’s pretty cool.

I then cover my chest and arms in the Sleepy body cream. Mirroring the same fragrance as Twilight it’s a great way for me to moisturise but also have the comforting smell that I can pop on just before hopping into bed.

It has proven really popular with a lot of customers including new mums and babies.

The last product that I am gradually starting to use, I actually picked up in the Lush Leeds Spa store. Temple balms are exclusive in the spa stores and you just apply it straight to your temples and pulse points making the product absorb quicker into your system.

These products make me feel so warm and cosy and definitely form the basis of my new routine.

4. Sleepy Yoga

Yoga is something that I do anyway to relax and really stretch my body. I absolutely love, I am definitely and old hippy at heart.

I have mentioned before the amazing ‘Yoga with Adrienne’ on YouTube and she has such lovely routines for all kinds of moods. She even has a routine to help you get off to sleep.

It honestly works and I highly recommend if you are really struggling to switch to give one of her videos a go!

5. Use a podcast or app to help drift off 

I used to be the kind of person who needs absolutely no noise or anything so I could sleep but now I find comfort in having either a podcast or some ‘white noise’ to help my brain drift off to sleep.

Handy Tip: Set your timer for around 30 minutes and instead of having a ringtone set ‘Stop Playing’ and hopefully by the time you have gone to sleep anything that was playing will automatically turn off.

I am really excited to share my sleepy journey with you all and I hope this has also inspired you to make some changes in your routine.

Just taking a few small steps makes all the difference and hopefully you can wake up happier and more energised. I am very excited to see if my productivity changes and I will of course keep you all updated.

  1. I feel you so hard with all of this! I’m much more of a night owl and I’m a lot more productive at night time so I find myself going to sleep around 3am when I finish my night’s tasks. I’m trying my best to get into a routine but I’ll have to try the lush products! I also agree with turning your phone off; getting notifications while you’re trying to sleep can be the biggest distraction! But as well as that, our phones emit a blue backlight that strains our eyes and keeps us awake. If you have a night mode on your phone, I definitely recommend turning that on as it makes your phone emit a warm backlight in the evening, but it’s still an idea to switch off devices – or at least tuck them under your pillow if you’re listening to a podcast.
    Great post, it’s good to know I’m not the only one who fears coming across as lazy!
